What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a core modality of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in which a licensed practitioner inserts thin, sterile, single-use needles into specific anatomical points, called acupoints, located along energy pathways known as meridians. According to TCM theory, unimpeded flow of Qi (vital energy) through these meridians is essential to health; disruption of that flow underlies pain and disease. By stimulating precise acupoints, acupuncture restores balance and supports the body's innate capacity to heal.
With origins spanning more than 2,000 years of continuous clinical practice, acupuncture is one of the world's oldest and most thoroughly documented medical traditions. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes acupuncture as effective for a broad spectrum of conditions, and it is now widely integrated into hospital pain management programs and integrative medicine centers across the United States.
How Acupuncture Works
Modern research offers several complementary explanations for acupuncture's clinical effects. Needle insertion at acupoints stimulates local sensory nerve fibers, triggering the release of endogenous opioids, including endorphins and enkephalins, that reduce pain perception at the spinal and cortical levels. Acupuncture also promotes microcirculatory blood flow, reduces local and systemic inflammation, and modulates the autonomic nervous system, shifting the body from a sympathetic (fight-or-flight) state toward parasympathetic (rest-and-repair) dominance.
A landmark systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Archives of Internal Medicine (Acupuncture for Chronic Pain, Vickers et al., 2012; PMID: 22965186) pooled data from nearly 18,000 patients and found acupuncture to be significantly more effective than both sham acupuncture and no-acupuncture controls for chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain, osteoarthritis, and chronic headache.

What to Expect at Your Acupuncture Appointment
Every visit at Angel Holistic Acupuncture follows a structured, patient-centered process designed to maximize both comfort and clinical results.
Initial Consultation
Your first visit begins with a thorough health intake covering your chief complaint, medical history, lifestyle, and goals. Pinghe Liou performs traditional tongue and pulse diagnosis, foundational TCM assessment tools that reveal patterns of imbalance beyond what a symptom list alone can capture. This evaluation informs a personalized treatment plan.
Treatment
Sterile, single-use, disposable needles are placed at selected acupoints, typically 8 to 20 per session. Most patients feel minimal discomfort; a brief sensation of warmth, heaviness, or tingling at the needle site is normal and indicates Qi activation. You rest comfortably for 20 to 45 minutes while the needles work. Supplementary modalities such as moxibustion or cupping may be added as clinically indicated.
Aftercare
After treatment, rest and light hydration are recommended for the remainder of the day. Some patients experience immediate relief; others notice gradual improvement over the following 24–48 hours. Pinghe Liou will outline a follow-up schedule (typically weekly for acute conditions, tapering to monthly maintenance) and may suggest complementary lifestyle or herbal support.
