What Is Tui Na?
Tui Na, Chinese for "push-grasp," is one of the oldest forms of therapeutic massage in the world, with a documented history spanning more than 2,000 years. Unlike Western relaxation massage, Tui Na is a clinical medical modality rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) meridian theory. It is not performed for general relaxation; it is applied to treat specific musculoskeletal conditions, restore the flow of Qi (vital energy), and address underlying patterns of imbalance identified through TCM diagnosis.
Tui Na is performed by a trained TCM practitioner who applies targeted manual techniques, including pushing, grasping, pressing, and rotating, along specific meridian pathways and at precise acupoints. This distinguishes it from conventional massage: every stroke and pressure point is selected for therapeutic intent based on an individualized assessment of the patient's condition, not a standard protocol.
At Angel Holistic Acupuncture, Tui Na is performed by Pinghe Liou, L.Ac., Dipl.OM, a licensed acupuncturist and NCCAOM Board Certified Diplomate of Oriental Medicine with over 20 years of clinical experience. Sessions may be performed independently or combined with acupuncture to maximize therapeutic benefit.
How Tui Na Differs from Western Massage
| Feature | Tui Na | Western Massage |
|---|---|---|
| Basis | TCM meridian theory and Qi flow | Western anatomy and physiology |
| Goal | Restore Qi flow & treat specific conditions | General relaxation and muscle relief |
| Techniques | Specific pressing, rolling, kneading of meridians and acupoints | Broader muscle work (effleurage, petrissage) |
| Session | Often combined with acupuncture for enhanced effect | Typically standalone |
| Sensation | More targeted pressure; may feel therapeutic intensity | Generally relaxing and gentle |
Tui Na Techniques Used
Tui (Pushing)
Smooth, linear pushing strokes applied along meridian pathways to move Qi and blood and clear stagnation.
Na (Grasping)
Rhythmic grasping and kneading of muscles and tendons to release tension, improve flexibility, and restore circulation.
An (Pressing)
Firm, sustained pressure applied directly to specific acupoints to stimulate Qi and relieve pain at targeted sites.
Rou (Rotating)
Circular, oscillating movements that relax tissues, invigorate local circulation, and reduce muscle guarding.
Conditions Treated
What to Expect
Assessment
Your session begins with a detailed intake and palpation exam. Pinghe Liou identifies patterns of Qi stagnation, deficiency, or excess to guide the specific techniques and meridians targeted in your treatment.
Treatment
A hands-on session of 30–60 minutes using Tui, Na, An, and Rou techniques applied to your specific condition. Tui Na may be combined with acupuncture in the same appointment for enhanced therapeutic effect.
Follow-Up
Treatment frequency depends on the chronicity and severity of your condition. Acute conditions often respond in fewer sessions; chronic patterns typically benefit from a series of regular treatments with reassessment over time.
