What Is Chinese Herbal Medicine?
Chinese Herbal Medicine is a cornerstone of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a medical system with over 2,000 years of continuous clinical practice. It draws on a vast pharmacopoeia of more than 600 commonly used medicinal substances, including roots, bark, seeds, flowers, and minerals, to support the body’s natural healing capacity.
Unlike Western herbal supplements that often isolate single active compounds, Chinese herbal medicine works through carefully constructed multi-herb formulas. Each formula is designed so the ingredients act synergistically, with some herbs addressing the root pattern, others treating branch symptoms, and others moderating potential side effects. This formula-based approach, refined over centuries, allows for a level of precision and nuance that single-herb remedies cannot match.
At Angel Holistic Acupuncture, no two patients receive the same formula. Every prescription is individualized based on your diagnosis, constitution, and current health presentation.
How We Formulate Your Herbal Treatment
Before any herbs are prescribed, Pinghe Liou performs a full TCM diagnostic evaluation. Tongue examination reveals the state of internal organs and the presence of heat, cold, dampness, or deficiency. Pulse diagnosis, assessing 28 distinct qualities across six positions, provides further detail about the condition of your Qi, Blood, Yin, and Yang. Combined with a detailed health history, this evaluation determines your individual pattern of imbalance.
A base classical formula matching your primary pattern is then selected and modified, with individual herbs added, removed, or adjusted in dosage, to precisely fit your presentation on that visit. As your condition evolves, the formula evolves with it. Follow-up consultations allow for ongoing monitoring and refinement, ensuring your treatment stays matched to your current state rather than a fixed diagnosis from weeks prior.
