The short answer is: often yes, and more broadly than most patients expect. Insurance coverage for acupuncture has expanded over the past several years. The turning point came in 2020 when Medicare began covering acupuncture for chronic low back pain for the first time in the program’s history, signaling a mainstream shift in how acupuncture is categorized by U.S. health policy. Many private insurers followed suit, broadening their acupuncture coverage in response to the growing body of clinical evidence and patient demand.
In Virginia in 2026, most major commercial health insurance plans include some level of acupuncture coverage. The details vary by plan, employer, and diagnosis, but the landscape is considerably more favorable than it was even five years ago. Here is what you need to know.
Which Insurers Cover Acupuncture in Virginia?
Aetna
Covers acupuncture for multiple conditions under most commercial plans. Some plans require prior authorization; visit limits typically range from 20–30 per year. Coverage varies by employer plan design.
Anthem (BCBS Virginia)
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Virginia, now Anthem, covers acupuncture under most plans. Typical benefit: 20–30 visits per calendar year with a copay or coinsurance. One of the most straightforward acupuncture benefits in the region.
UnitedHealthcare
Covers acupuncture under most commercial plans. Visit limits and copay structure vary; some plans include acupuncture under a broader complementary and alternative medicine benefit. Prior auth not typically required.
Cigna
Coverage depends on plan tier. Many Cigna commercial plans cover acupuncture without a referral; some require a referral from a primary care physician. Contact member services to confirm your specific plan.
VA / Veterans Affairs
The VA covers acupuncture for eligible veterans for many conditions, with no referral required at Angel Holistic Acupuncture. This is one of the broadest acupuncture benefits available. We work with VA billing.
Medicare
Covers acupuncture for chronic low back pain: up to 12 sessions in 90 days, extendable to 20 sessions if you show improvement. Must be provided by a Medicare-enrolled provider. Angel Holistic Acupuncture accepts Medicare.
Virginia Medicaid
Virginia Medicaid generally does not cover acupuncture as of 2026. Patients on Medicaid are welcome to use self-pay rates or HSA/FSA funds. We will work with you to find an affordable path to treatment.
What Diagnoses Are Typically Covered?
Insurance coverage for acupuncture is almost always diagnosis-specific. Even if your plan covers acupuncture in principle, the specific condition you’re being treated for must meet the insurer’s medical necessity criteria. The diagnoses most broadly covered across Virginia insurers include:
- Chronic low back pain: the most broadly covered diagnosis; covered by Medicare, most commercial plans, and the VA
- Chronic neck pain and cervicogenic disorders
- Osteoarthritis (knee, hip, shoulder)
- Migraines and chronic headache: covered by most major commercial plans
- Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting
- Post-surgical pain
Coverage for other conditions (including anxiety, insomnia, IBS, fertility support, and menopausal symptoms) varies by plan. Some plans cover these conditions; others do not. We will verify the full scope of your coverage before your first appointment.
How to Check Your Coverage
You have two options: check yourself, or let us check for you (see below). If you prefer to call your insurer:
-
Find your insurance card Locate the member services number on the back of your insurance card.
-
Call member services and ask specifically: “Does my plan cover acupuncture? What is my copay or coinsurance? How many visits per year am I allowed? Is prior authorization required? What diagnoses are covered?” Write down the representative’s name and a reference number for the call.
-
Or book with us We verify benefits with your insurer before your first appointment and report back to you. No phone calls on your end, no surprises at the front desk.
What If My Insurance Doesn’t Cover Acupuncture?
If your insurance doesn’t cover acupuncture, or your coverage is exhausted for the year, there are still several ways to make treatment affordable:
| Option | Details |
|---|---|
| Self-Pay | Initial consultation: $150 • Follow-up visits: $85 |
| HSA / FSA | Acupuncture qualifies as an eligible expense for Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts. Pay with your pre-tax dollars. |
| Package Pricing | Ask about prepaid session packages, a cost-effective option if you know you’ll need multiple visits for a chronic condition. |
Chronic pain, migraines, and many other conditions treated by acupuncture carry significant costs in missed work, medication, and specialist visits. Acupuncture at $85/session often compares favorably to the ongoing cost of managing these conditions with pharmaceuticals alone, and without the side effect profile.
Not sure what your insurance covers? Just book an appointment and we’ll call your insurer and report back before your first visit. No guesswork, no surprises.
