How Acupuncture Supports Fertility
Acupuncture works through several interconnected physiological pathways to improve reproductive outcomes. By stimulating specific acupoints, fine needles increase blood flow to the ovaries, uterus, and endometrium — improving the quality of the uterine lining and the environment in which an embryo implants. Acupuncture also modulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, the hormonal cascade that governs the menstrual cycle, ovulation, and progesterone production. Dysregulation of this axis underlies many common fertility diagnoses, from irregular cycles to luteal phase defect to PCOS.
Equally important is acupuncture's effect on the stress response. Elevated cortisol and other stress hormones directly suppress reproductive function — reducing LH pulsatility, impairing implantation, and shortening the luteal phase. Acupuncture measurably reduces cortisol and promotes parasympathetic nervous system activity, creating a hormonal environment more conducive to conception.
Both male and female fertility respond to treatment. For male factor infertility, acupuncture has been shown to improve sperm motility, morphology, and concentration. A landmark randomized controlled trial by Paulus WE et al. (2002) in Fertility and Sterility demonstrated a clinical pregnancy rate of 42.5% in the acupuncture group versus 26.3% in controls when acupuncture was used alongside IVF embryo transfer — a finding that established acupuncture as a serious adjunct to assisted reproduction.

Acupuncture & IVF: What the Research Shows
A 2012 meta-analysis by Zheng CH et al., published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, analyzed multiple randomized controlled trials and concluded that acupuncture performed around the time of IVF embryo transfer significantly increases clinical pregnancy rates. The analysis found consistent improvements in implantation rates across studies, with particular benefit observed when treatment was administered both before egg retrieval and on the day of transfer.

Additional research demonstrates that acupuncture reduces anxiety and psychological stress in IVF patients, a factor that independently affects cycle outcomes. Studies also confirm improvements in sperm parameters (motility, morphology, DNA integrity) following a course of acupuncture in men with idiopathic infertility. The emerging evidence base supports acupuncture as a meaningful complement to conventional reproductive medicine protocols.
Acupuncture complements reproductive medicine. Patients undergoing IVF, IUI, or other assisted reproductive technologies should continue working closely with their reproductive endocrinologist. Acupuncture integrates alongside these protocols and is associated with no known adverse effects on cycle outcomes.
What a Fertility Acupuncture Treatment Plan Looks Like
Initial Consultation
Your first visit includes a comprehensive TCM intake covering menstrual history, reproductive timeline, prior diagnoses, and current medications. Tongue and pulse diagnosis inform pattern identification. Session 1 combines full assessment with your first acupuncture treatment.
Treatment Course
Typically 8–12 weekly sessions are recommended, begun at least 3 months before IVF retrieval or alongside natural conception efforts. Protocols are adjusted based on menstrual cycle phase: follicular, ovulatory, and luteal phases each call for different point selections and therapeutic goals.
Ongoing Support
Many patients continue acupuncture through the first trimester to support progesterone levels and reduce early miscarriage risk. Chinese herbal medicine may be added to the treatment plan where appropriate, with formulas tailored to your individual TCM pattern diagnosis.
